I currently own 3 professional cameras, but from time to time people ask me about my favorite camera or to compare this camera vs another one. With that in mind I started reminiscing of all the cameras I've had since I started photographing events back in 2008 and ended up listing them all, yes all 12 of them.
In reality I've had more than 12 however I'm narrowing my scope to only those cameras that I've used professionally (to make money) and purposely have left out camera's I've used for one particular gig or angle such as GoPros or smaller point and shoot cameras. With that in mind, here are the 12 cameras I've used in my professional career as a photographer:
Now, you've probably noticed the low number of photos before 2014 vs after 2014. The reason for that is because that was the year I transitioned from using Apple Aperture as my editing software and started using Adobe Lightroom. In order for me to make a 'clean' transfer of files I purged all the non-essential images from before 2014. Meaning burst shot sequences, rejects, out of focus, and many personal (non professional) work was deleted.
Here are a few take aways from this trip back in time:
1- I am a Canon guy true and true: I started out using Nikon and going back and forth between Nikon and Canon in the very beginning, however most of my friends had Canon and it was easier for me to swap/borrow lenses from my community when I used Canon. Later on I remember using Panasonic for a couple of video work, but that was somewhere around 2016 and by then I already had an entire ecosystem based around Canon lenses/batteries and it wasn't worth keeping up with 2 systems.
2- Give it up to CANON 6d!!!: This camera has been the one I've kept the longest (2014-present) and I'm only 'retiring it' from the video production, not my photography. The full sensor, wireless capabilities, how well it performs in low light, simply makes it a workhorse. On the video department the soft/sluggish autofocus is showing its age. For video work I'm now going off of the Canon EOS R AND the newest addition to my arsenal, the Canon EOS 80d.
3- My Top 3 Cameras: Without a doubt my top 3 cameras are the Canon 5dm2, Canon 6d, and Canon EOS R. For what i do and what I've done (events/portraits/traveling/video production) these three cameras account for 64k out of 84k shots I've kept since 2008. This means 75% of all my kept shots have come from either the 5dm2, 6d, or EOS R. Impressive.
I realize this isn't a review of each camera, but rather a chronicle of my my camera ownership and usage. Hopefully this all makes sense and if you have any question please do not hesitate to ask.
If I could give you a hug, hi5, or fist bump from here I definitely would. As long as you don't mind a couple typos here and there, you're MOST welcome to check in, drop a comment here and there, and make yourself at home.
