“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly. “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Mark 14:3-6 NIV
This made no sense. This was way over the top. Wasteful for some. Unnecessary to say least. An exaggeration to most. Beautiful to Jesus. Art to me.
A couple drops of perfume would’ve been appropriate but it would’ve miss the point. The point wasn’t appropriateness, the point was I want to YELL to the world my love for my master! Yes, a normal voice tone would’ve gotten the message across, but this woman outlandishness was meant to make a statement, a force to be reckon with, an artistic expression.
This woman touched a fiber within God that went unnoticed to most. God loves genuine expressions of love towards him. God appreciates art since He is the supreme artist of all creation. He didn’t stop this woman. Quite the contrary, he welcomed the expression and celebrated her quirkiness. I love that!
Let us promote artistic expressions as colorful/loud as they might seem to us. Let us embrace those who think different than us. Let us lavishly yell out our love for God with our very lives.
If I could give you a hug, hi5, or fist bump from here I definitely would. As long as you don't mind a couple typos here and there, you're MOST welcome to check in, drop a comment here and there, and make yourself at home.
