“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” John 8:31-32 NIV
That last part “you’ll know the truth and the truth will set you free” is a very popular biblical teaching very well known even in pop culture nowadays.
What is not so well known is the proper sequence. We are set free by knowing, but we know by first by HOLDING. Those who hold are called disciples. Holding something implies TIME, for holding something for a short period of time wouldn’t make anyone a practitioner or disciple, right? This means we experience freedom when we hold the truth for a long time... as we become disciples.
This isn’t to say we aren’t free on the spot. We are. However we experience this freedom as we hold the truth as we walk by faith for a considerable amount of time.
