“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.” John 6:5-6 NIV
My first reaction to this passage was ‘Jesus and food seems to go hand in hand...’ then I noticed Jesus asking Philip a question just to test him. Notice this isn’t meant to tempt Philip but to test test him.
It was a test because Jesus wasn’t asking Philip to really solve a problem since the problem was already solved. Jesus knew what and how it was going to unfold. Philip didn’t and that’s why he was asked... to see where his faith laid in situations he didn’t know the answer.
Perhaps that’s where you and I find ourselves in today. Perhaps you are wondering where XYZ will come from, or how it will unfold. This is where Jesus pauses and ask you and me a question. He already knows what we don’t know, but WE need to know in whom are we trusting. We need to be confronted with this question and verbally/audibly declare our allegiance to God.
The question isn’t about the answer. The question is about our faith
