“Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.”
Luke 22:54-55 NIV
This is the beginning of Peter’s downfall, when he denies Jesus three times. This is what Peter vehemently denied he’d ever do, in fact he almost took offense when Jesus told him about this. Peter filled his mouth with pride and doubled down on following Jesus until death, now is following Jesus ‘at a distance’.
I don’t blame him. I’d probably do the same or perhaps I’d have bolted with the others. Is one thing to have communion with God in good/okay times. Is another thing to keep that communion when the going gets tough. The easier path is to walk away or like Peter walk discreetly.
The problem with following from afar is that with end up with the association without the power. Peter was immediately associated with God, but didn’t have the power to withstand it. He automatically folded.
Let us keep close tabs with the one we are following. Let us not end up lagging behind and having loss associations with our faith, or we might get entangled, frustrated, and worst off than when we first started following.
