““But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”” Luke 18:13-14 NIV
Truth to be told when anyone would stand and introduce themselves as an alcoholic it bothered me. Why would anyone hang on to a label like this? Isn’t this self deprecating? Isn’t the goal ‘not to be’ an alcoholic?
Today Jesus tells us the parable of two people who went up to the temple to pray. One said the regular thing and even threw in some self grandiose in there for good measure. The other one, a career cheater, someone people already categorized as a lost case, approached God as a SINNER, as someone spiritually bankrupt. The result? This person was justified and exalted before God. Why? Because he humbled himself.
Let us approach God from a position of dependence and from our brokenness. God already knows we are broken, we just need to own it. Hi, my name is Arturo and I’m a sinner.
