““The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’”
Luke 16:3-4 NIV
This whole parable is both, one of my favorites and one of the most questionable. Long story short we have a dishonest manager being praised by Jesus! Why then do I like it so much? Because one of my core sins is cheating, wanting to get ahead any possible way. The other reason? I believe this guy got it right.
Was he going to get fired? Yes. Was he a dishonest manager? Yes. Did he change his ways? No. What then did he do that merited Jesus’ praise? He focused on people, he focused on RELATIONSHIPS. I remember when I worked at an Apple Store the philosophy/indoctrinationwas clear: focus on people, not products. Mind you, Apple has one of the most innovative and amazing products! Yet, focus on people not products. The result? In 1 year working at the Apple Store here in Boca Raton a little over $1,000,000 was sold by yours truly... working part-time. Why? Because Jesus was right, focus on people.
Let us avoid getting entangled by this parable and instead focus on the main thing Jesus cared about: relationships.
