“Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.” John 11:54 NIV
In this passage we see Jesus being cautious and picking his spots as far as public appearances due to the religious leaders seeking to end his life. It was a move made out of timing, not out of fear. He knew his time hasn’t come yet and decided to lay low.
These past few months I’ve been conflicted on how churches have handled public meetings in the midst of the lockdown. My first instinct was ‘screw it, just meet, openly, and carry on with the message of hope’. So I was deep down a bit critical of churches shutting down their public gatherings.
However after reading this passage today I see there’s wisdom in withdrawing. It isn’t a sign of defeat, but a sign of maturity.
Let us learn when to proceed and when to take a back seat. Both moves still keep us in the vehicle... we are merely changing positions.
