“Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.” John 2:6-7 NIV
This is the first recorded miracle of Jesus: turning water into fine wine and in the process keep a wedding going and his mother happy. But these verses we see today say nothing about wedding, celebration, or wine. Instead these verses talk to us about jars, probably jars of clay which have been filled with water. Nothing special. Yet.
In reality we could find jars everywhere in Israel, some empty and some filled with water. Again, nothing special here. The story would’ve passed as a regular story if not for the fact that Jesus was in the room and he had a plan to turn the content inside those jars from ordinary to extraordinary, from common to special, from expected to unexpected.
I know there are MANY areas in my life it feels I’m just ‘holding water’. Nothing special there. My prayer is to keep inviting Jesus into my living space, into my life. Why? Because as long as he’s near there’s always the chance my water might turn into wine, into something special.
