“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages. ”” John 12:3-5 NIV
Art isn’t common. Art makes us pause and ponder. Sometimes it shocks us. Sometimes it makes us wonder and really good art is nothing short of memorable. In today’s story Mary created art and Jesus applauded her.
Her action was misunderstood and she was immediately judged. She was labeled wasteful, too much, outlandish. Jesus however welcomed the expression and defended her.
In many groups/religious art is censored, and the tendency is to control it. I am glad our Master has an appreciation for the oddballs, for that high note, and yes even for that strong perfume/cologne. To this day we are still talking about this art and the artist behind it.
