“But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?” They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.” John 18:39-40 NIV
Barabbas was serving a sentence for what he has done. He was rightfully condemned and as far as we know he was just doing his time. In a sudden chain of events, all unrelated to him by the way, he found himself walking away a free man. We are Barabbas.
There wasn’t a single thing Barabbas did to earn his freedom. It was all done to him. Jesus literally took his place and paid the ultimate price. Even without Barabbas consent! We are Barabbas.
The story isn’t clear if this man ever look back and thank Jesus, if he ever wonder or care about what have just taken place. How the odds turned to his favor. However OUR story is still being written and while we might never know Barabbas response we are in full control of ours.
Let us respond properly to this unmerited gift of life given to us by Jesus.
